Unwanted CHild- 2nd Sunday

Unwanted CHild: Who shine

Hey there,

Miss me? I don’t know if you miss me or not, but I definitely miss you guys.

Let's dive in. As the years passed, Riya’s mother spent her life tending to household chores while striving to study, but she never succeeded due to her father's conservative beliefs. Riya told me that her mother is the hero of her life. When Riya’s mother was 18 years old, she almost lost her life to a tiger attack while grazing cattle in the forest. Luckily, she survived, and that's why Riya exists today (destiny, right?).

Meanwhile, Riya’s father abandoned his education and devoted himself entirely to earning a living to support the family. He lived in India, only returning home every 2–3 years to provide financial support. During one of these absences, a planned incident occurred. You know, life in a village can be tough, especially for widows (Riya’s grandmother) who must battle against societal norms and even their own relatives to protect themselves and their children. Unfortunately, a villager set fire to Riya’s father's house while the family was out for a puja (a religious ritual), making life incredibly difficult for them.

With no food, shelter, or clothing, Riya’s father and his brother, Ramesh, worked tirelessly for five years to provide for the family. They barely ate and slept only 1-2 hours a day. After an immense struggle, when the situation was in control Riya’s father returned to his hometown to marry and settle down.

Nirmala (Riya’s mother) never had the opportunity to study or explore life. By the time she turned 23, being unmarried at that age was considered troublesome, and she faced constant taunts and questions about her character and marriage prospects. Despite the pressure, her parents always supported her.

Everything happens in its own time, and Nirmala's marriage was no exception. Remember when I mentioned Riya’s father's sister marrying Riya’s mother? Well, fate worked its magic when Riya’s father visited his sister and laid eyes on Nirmala. It was love at first sight. Destiny brought them together, as Resham (Riya’s father) was also looking for a good wife, and Nirmala's parents were searching for a suitable husband for their daughter.

After the marriage, Nirmala faced a new set of challenges. Unprepared for what lay ahead, she found herself struggling in her new role. While Riya’s father worked hard in India to provide a better life for his wife and family, Nirmala's life took a 360-degree turn. Despite coming from a respected family, she was treated poorly by her in-laws, who viewed her as a servant. In those days, communication technology was non-existent, making it difficult for Nirmala to stay in touch with her husband. She couldn't even write letters but managed to read them with the help of schoolchildren returning home.

After 2-3 years, Riya’s father returned home, bringing happiness to Nirmala's life after a long time. Like scenes from movies and TV series, Riya’s grandmother and her father's family acted as if they loved and respected her. But after four months, Resham had to return to India, as he was the sole breadwinner for the family. Not long after, Nirmala became pregnant, and her life took a difficult turn.

Her in-laws treated her terribly, expecting her to work day and night, even during her pregnancy. Sometimes, they wouldn't even provide her with food, claiming they forgot or didn't see her. Despite the hardships, Nirmala remained strong, never considering giving up and always believing in karma. Riya’s father was unaware of the situation due to the lack of communication technology at the time.

The hardest moment for Riya’s parents came when Nirmala lost her infant daughter. Tears come to my eyes just thinking about it. Riya’s grandmother and her aunt were to blame. After Nirmala gave birth in the field while working, they neglected to take the baby to the hospital. As a result, the little girl passed away due to malnutrition and a lack of care.

I have to go now, but next time I'll tell you about the journey of an unwanted child. I'll miss you.
