 Unwanted CHild: Who Shine

“1st Sunday”

What a beautiful morning," the young lady exclaimed as she gazed out of the window. It was a stunning day in the spring season. Rising at 5 am, as she did every morning, she prepared for her early university classes. Standing at the bus station, she observed a little girl playing with her parents and siblings in the playground. Lately, she had been missing her family terribly, especially with the festival season commencing back in her home country. She had relocated to the USA for her higher education, driven by the dream she carried on her shoulders and the promise of a better future that she believed she deserved. She was far from her family, her home, and even her own country.

Oh, I forgot to introduce myself. I'm Junu, Riya's best friend. You must be wondering who Riya is—she's the girl I mentioned earlier. She's always been there for me, supporting me and brightening my most stressful days. And, by the way, she's a talented chef—shh, it's our little secret. It's been two years since she embarked on this new life.

Today, I've decided to share the story of my best friend's life and the struggles she and her parents endured, as far as I know. Oh yes, I got her permission to share this, so don't worry. Just a heads up—it's going to be a long story, so please bear with me (haha).

Let's begin. Riya's story starts before she was even born. Let's delve into her parents' lives. Their tale is one we've all read in books, seen in movies, or heard from others, much like how I heard it from my friend.

Riya's father, Resham, hailed from a small village in Nepal. He was born into a lower-middle-class family, one of eight siblings—shocking, right? But it was common in those times. His family made a living as farmers, enduring numerous hardships to provide food and clothing for their large family. To alleviate their struggles, Riya's grandfather ventured to Bangladesh for work. He washed cars and sold watches in the evenings, working odd jobs to make ends meet. Tragically, he lost his life there due to exhaustion and poor health, exacerbated by financial constraints. Riya's grandmother was left to fend for the family and battle against the in-laws. This put immense pressure on Riya's father, leading him to forsake his education at the age of twelve. Alongside his brothers, he journeyed to India to support the family and secure a better future for their younger siblings. By then, his three sisters were already married off, adhering to the societal belief that married daughters couldn't aid their parents.

Meanwhile, Nirmala, Riya's mother, was born into a well-known family with a total of eleven siblings, and she was the youngest among them. Despite her family's middle-class status, her grandparents held conservative views regarding girls' education and freedom. They believed that granting freedom, education, and equal rights to their children was unethical. Despite these constraints, Riya's mother learned to write her name—a significant achievement in her eyes.

After twenty years from the birth of Riya’s father and mother, destiny began to shape the life of a beautiful and shining star. Oh yes, I'm obviously talking about Riya. Surprisingly, Riya’s father's sister was married to Riya’s mother's brother. That's what I call destiny, and yes, Riya mentioned that phrase to me.

Oh, it seems like it's time for a break. I'll continue with the rest of the story after the break.
